Sophistication Redefined: A Luxe Weekend with Mandarin Oriental, Miami

Miami is my favorite city after New York. Its perfect beach weather complements the plethora of restaurants and vibrant streets.

When it comes to luxury accommodations, discerning travelers seek experiences that transcend mere comfort and convenience. Nestled amidst the stunning landscapes and vibrant culture of Miami, the Mandarin Oriental Miami stands as an epitome of opulence, sophistication, and impeccable hospitality. My recent stay left an ineradicable mark that redefined my perception of five-star hotels. Here’s my review of the hotel and why I think it is a must when in Miami.

LOCATION AND LOBBY

The Mandarin Oriental resides on the island of Brickell Key, also known as Claughton Island. Before guests even think about setting foot in the lobby, they are welcomed with a serene and exclusive location that is tucked away from the rest of the city yet close enough to major attractions. Guests will enjoy views of what Miami has to offer – tranquil water and marvelous skyscrapers. Enjoy a short ride on Brickell Key Drive as your private sanctuary awaits you.

Upon entering the hotel, you’re greeted with a spacious but contemporary lobby that exudes chic Asian style. Plush sofas, glossy marble, dark wood, and bamboo accents offer an aura of coziness and elegance that permeates every corner. The oversized windows invite natural light that glistens on the scrumptious bay views all around the lobby. The layout is easy to navigate with the front desk area, concierge desk, and the MO Bar and Lounge available at the guest’s disposal. There is plenty of seating around the lounge area in case you need a quick pit stop to rest before heading up to your room.

The check-in process was seamless. The wonderful front office team is truly an asset to the location, ensuring you’re greeted with genuine warmth. They will offer you a refreshing welcome drink to cool down from the hot temperatures outside. I always pay attention to details and this was already a highlight for me. To my pleasant surprise, the room was ready hours ahead of time.

THE SUITE

We stayed in the Junior Bay View Suite which is equipped with a King sized bed, floor-to-ceiling windows that let in natural light, a seating area, and a spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower and separate deep soaking tub. The decor is minimalistic with pops of color derived from the furniture that reflect a tastefully executed design between the panoramic views of the city and the tranquil waters of Biscayne Bay.  The highlight of the suite is certainly the furnished balcony. The balcony is big enough for two guests and a room service table. I thoroughly enjoyed having breakfast here while taking in the beautiful skyline views of Brickell. I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t mention being prepared to delight in a restful night from its plush bed.

DINING

While the hotel offers basic services such as in-room dining, I was glad to experience a few of their dining options outside of the suite. Breakfast, brunch, and dinner are served at their restaurant, La Mar which offers water-edge views. Breakfast can be served a la carte or buffet style. They have plenty of options for every picky eater and foodie alike from bagels, fresh fruits, omelets, and meats and pastries. You can enjoy your meal inside or outside and don’t forget to try their delicious freshly squeezed juices.

At night the space transforms into a majestic Peruvian restaurant by famed chef, Gaston Acurio. The hotel surprised us with a multiple-course seafood dinner (with the exception of chicken empanadas) and probably the biggest fish dish I’ve ever seen! We graciously tried their scallops, tuna ceviche, calamari, snapper, shrimp – should I keep going – prawn, and octopus. The food was absolutely delicious and is served in huge portion sizes. Unfortunately, we could not finish it in one setting but it will forever be one of the most memorable culinary journeys of my life. Each dish was meticulously prepared with a symphony of flavors designed to tantalize the taste buds.

The hotel also has a poolside restaurant called Oasis Pool Cafe which offers light bites. I was impressed by how extensive the menu was as I normally find many menus of this caliber to be short and sweet. Guests can choose from sushi, salads, sandwiches, finger foods, and desserts.

We happily stuffed ourselves with a turkey sandwich, chicken wings, fresh guacamole, chips, and of course sushi.

Amenities and Services

The beautiful skyline and marina views serve as a backdrop to the pool. Lounging chairs decorate the exterior alongside umbrellas and palm trees. I will admit that the pool area is a bit on the smaller side so I recommend skipping the afternoon swim to have the pool all to yourself. There is a man-made beach area adjacent to the pool which guests can enjoy lounging. During my stay, there was a wedding on site so I did not have a chance to check it out.

The brand is proud of its spa service and I can see why. From the personable staff to the warm ambiance and soothing massage, the spa is a true testament to the brand’s commitment to unparalleled service. I didn’t realize how much I needed a moment to recalibrate both my body and mind. I had a wonderful deep tissue massage which certainly alleviated the tight knots and tension I was feeling for months.

The property also has a circular path that joggers will appreciate for an early morning run.

Whether you’re visiting Miami for a long period of time or for a weekend getaway, the Mandarin Oriental, Miami serves as the ultimate getaway for your next Florida visit.
