Now that that world has made it less restrictive to travel, I’ve been on a few short and long-haul trips and have put together this list of my most used items that I use when I travel. I hope this post is helpful for you when planning your next trip and please feel free to share your must-have travel essentials in the comments below!
Noise-Cancelling Headphones – I can’t help but laugh while writing this because prior to getting noise-canceling headphones, my husband and I had gotten into a huge argument. I am very meticulous about how I spend my money and did not see the point of dropping nearly $400 on a pair of headphones when my AirPods were perfectly fine. Well, I am so glad my husband did not listen to me and surprised me with them because they were my savior during a flight to London. Not only are they super comfortable but their battery power is long-lasting, giving you a 30-hour use. I did not realize how loud the plane was and I can’t help but wonder how did I live my life without them. Whether it is a short flight or a long-haul flight, I never travel without my Sony headphones
Apple AirTags – I am the most paranoid person when it comes to checked bags. If I had to make a list of my top 10 fears, losing a piece of luggage would probably be on top of that list. First world problem much? This is where my handy AirTags come in. Equipped with real-time location tracking using Apple’s Find My network, you can attach this small device anywhere inside of your luggage (or dog) and reduce the stress of potentially losing your luggage. An added bonus? The AirTag is equipped with encryption technology that will keep your location data private and secure.
Universal Travel Adapter – Reality check: power outlets differ throughout the world. If you’re planning a trip abroad, you’re going to need one of these tools. No ifs, ands, or buts. A universal travel adapter provides a seamless transition between different electrical systems and outlets, allowing one to use electronic devices in any part of the world, without any interruption. Plus who wouldn’t want to look like a pro traveler?
Neck Pillow – I think it’s safe to say that we’ve all faced the horror of extreme fatigue, discomfort, and soreness from a stiff neck. Whether you’re taking a long flight or a road trip, do yourself a favor and invest in a neck pillow for added support. Your neck will thank you and you will arrive at your destination feeling refreshed. I highly recommend this during trips that involve time zone differences. I always recommend sleeping on the flight instead of sleeping in your hotel room as soon as you land to better adjust to the time zone.
Comfortable Sneakers – I know we all love our cute shoes but trust me those shoes aren’t going to get you very far during your trip. Unless you are staying in a resort and do not plan on ever leaving it until your trip ends, I recommend packing yourself a pair of comfortable walking shoes. I normally wear them throughout my entire trip unless I am going to a fancy restaurant or somewhere that requires a dress code. You can’t go wrong with a solid pair of white sneakers to match any outfit. I tend to gravitate toward neutral colors and Adidas makes some of the best ones.
Hand Sanitizer and Wipes – I don’t think I can think of one person who travels without this. Funny story actually, before the pandemic took the world by storm, I used to always travel with this because let’s be real, planes are filthy, and also because I’m a huge germaphobe. My boyfriend, now husband used to be super embarrassed when I would disinfect my seat and tray. Crazy how it took one pandemic for him to agree with what I do. I love my good old Purell and Wet Ones.
Clear Makeup Bag – This is such a subtle feature but having a see-through makeup bag was a game changer for me. I love the ability to find the exact location of my makeup and skincare without having to empty everything out. Amazon has a ton of selections but I personally use the one below and it’s pretty durable.
Makeup Mirror – Don’t always rely on your hotel bathroom to have a makeup mirror because chances are they might not always have one, the light may be too dim or it is placed in a weird place. I came across this mirror on Amazon and I do not regret it. It’s equipped with 3 different light settings and is very lightweight and thin. I love it so much that I even use it while getting ready for work!
Weekender Duffle Bag to Use as Personal item – When I found out that you can use a duffle bag as a personal item, I was shocked! My husband and I travel with a ton of supplemental equipment for our devices and our carry-ons plus his personal item do not have enough space to fit these items. Plus as a woman, I carry way more things! The general rule is that you can use a duffle bag as a personal item as long as it can fit underneath the seat in front of you. I haven’t tested this theory on every flight because from what I understand this is okay for U.S. domestic flights but you may run into some issues with an international flight.
Cord Organizer – One of my biggest problems with packing is keeping cords organized. I absolutely hate having to rummage through my personal item for a charger and I never thought that a cord organizer existed until now. Say goodbye to messy cords and invest in a cord organizer as soon as you can.
Zip Ties – I am an organization freak and I will always jump at the chance of taking my organization further. I love these zip ties for their ability to prevent your cords from tangling.
Portable Steamer – For the longest time I was an iron girl and once I was introduced to a steamer my world completely changed. This is my favorite portable steamer that works well for those stubborn wrinkles. It folds easily to maximize space and it’s very chic!
Portable Charger/Power Bank – As a content creator, battery life is a necessity for me. Even if you are not a content creator, be wary that functions like GPS and the camera use a ton of battery. I recommend never leaving your hotel room or wherever you are staying without a portable charger.
Luggage Scale – I try to avoid checking bags like the plague (I always have this fear of the airport losing my luggage) but sometimes you don’t have a choice. The other part of traveling that I try to avoid is having to find out that my suitcase is overweight so I found this nifty little scale that is perfect to take with you anywhere!
Alarm Keychain – I am including this with solo travelers in mind but this is great for anyone. You should always practice caution wherever you go. Not to be daunting but nowhere is safe. This keychain is great as it triggers a high pitch alarm and lights to alert anyone around you should you find yourself in a dangerous situation.
Travel Tripod – Take your photography to the next level with the use of a travel tripod. Whether you’re a solo traveler and do not feel comfortable asking a stranger to take your photo or you want to take a long exposure shot with your phone, a travel tripod will change your life. I use this at home when I am filming by myself, I need to keep the phone sturdy, or if I am traveling and need the phone to stay at the exact same spot. Plus I love that you no longer need to sacrifice space as it easily collapses to a smaller size and can fit just about anywhere.
SPF/Sunscreen – This is a life essential. I use to be one of those people who thought that SPF was a scam. Fast forward to a face full of dark spots and I decided to start incorporating it into my skincare routine. It transformed my face and I can honestly say I feel confident more than ever walking outside without makeup. Do not, I repeat, do not go a day without using SPF. I do not care if you plan on staying inside your house all day, or if it’s pouring cats and dogs outside, or if you’re out chasing the Northern Lights, always use SPF.
Toilet Seat Covers – TMI but I squat even after putting a seat cover on the toilet because I am that germaphobic. But reality hit me when I discovered that squatting is actually bad for your bladder. Yes, you can use toilet paper but sometimes that doesn’t work out for the best so pack some seat covers for the sake of keeping your sanity.
Water Shoes – One of my most underrated essentials. These shoes come in handy during water excursions and are great for walking on hot sand or rocky beaches!
Shoe Bags – Do you really want to mix your clothes with your dirty shoes? These shoe bags are perfect to fit multiple pairs of shoes in one bag.
Bluetooth Wireless Transmitter – If you’re using AirPods or any other headset that does not come with a cord to connect to the plane, you’re going to need a transmitter. Unfortunately, the technology that is dispersed among airplane TV screens is outdated.
Toothbrush Covers – On my never-ending quest to avoid germs I recommend keeping your toothbrushes covered.
Honorable mention – Global Entry, TSA Pre-Check, and Clear. This option applies to American citizens or permanent residents but it’s such a tremendous time saver at the airport!
TSA Pre-Check – Applies to departing flights from U.S. airports and expedites the security process. I never spent more than 5 minutes in the TSA Pre-Check line during peak times. And the best part? You DO NOT have to remove your shoes or remove your laptop from your bag.
Global Entry: Applies to travelers returning to the U.S. from international flights. This also saves time when going through customs and immigration. The experiences will differ in airports and terminals but there have been times when I did not even speak to an agent when returning. I simply had to scan my biometrics at a kiosk and was good to go.
Clear: Scan your biometrics and enjoy being escorted to the front of the line.
Pro Tip: Apply for a travel credit card that will reimburse you for the costs of the above.
